GzDoom can't get old, introducing Hellslinger
Hellslinger is a fast paced, game based on the classic doom engine. HellWorks team are the developers behind the game and published by HellForge studios. For a lot of people, aesthetics of the game may be a priority. Some other people favors the gameplay and the system of the game. And then, there is the average classic doom players who gets the most fun gameplay with good visuals. The classical doom was build in the id tech 1 engine. that also helped port the game to the Nintendo 64. and the game evolved to Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal (there are releases between the old and the recent titles). Some cool people wanted to replay the classical Doom games on PCs. at that time it was not easy. Enter the GZDoom project. GZDoom is a source port of the early id tech engines that were used in older doom titles. suddenly, all games was almost playable on modern systems. It needed some tweaking and changing, but in the end, it was possible.
Why all of this history lesson?. Hellslinger is based on the GZDoom technology. As they use the old and classical doom engines to produce fun challenging games. The aesthetics are not the best, but hey its doom baby isn't it?. I was born in 2001, and started playing games at the age of 4, the first game was Max Payne. I didn't have the opportunity to try those classical doom titles. I only lived to try the doom 3 old game. Coming from the millennials, This game was a rare emerald for me. It was soo fun. the game looks good-ish, the gameplay is great, and world was well built. After completing the tutorial, I took a look at the textures. They are good, look good and makes the game look fresh. You wouldn't really feel that old. Hellslinger was a lite game, easy to download and easy on the system to play. I had no issues playing the game on fedora linux.
The gun feeling is great, the variety is good and fun. I like the interaction with the world. It gives the game a dip of depth to interact with the world. The enemies have a variety, there were no questionable movement bugs or else. They were looking good and detailed and I liked it. Hellslinger also had some parkour platforming which was not so challenging. It was fun to move between sections of the game with some parkour. It gives the vibe of the 2016 Doom, but it is the original engine baby!. What I liked most about the game was the direction of the gameplay. Once you start and play Hellslinger for a bit, you don't get lost in the mix. The parkour platforms has tackles that prevent you from overstepping. Even rooms have details that lead you to the next room/lever that you interact with. This is fun for me. The game had rooms/arenas with a horde system. Enemies attack you almost from everywhere, you have to kill them all to get to the next areas. similar games use this technique of progression as discussed in Reaver. These sections with horde systems was finely placed between parkour movements. This prevented the repetition from going all over the place. Solid style, solid gameplay and great versatility with the GZDoom and the classical doom concept overall.
The Verdict
Hellslinger is a great game with good looking textures and well animated bots in a retro "legendary" engine. I had so much fun playing the game demo on steam. It was an amazing experience, encourage everyone to play it. Support the developers by wishlisting the game on steam. If you could give the demo a try. That was me, Joey and this was Hellslinger.
