When Metroidvania get the RTX update this is the result, introducing Grime, Colors of Rot

Grime is a mix of souls games and metroidvania

Grime is a platformer 3D game on steam that looks like Metroid games and carries some DNA from souls games, and yes elements that made Elden Ring, the game of the year 2022. Before we jump deeper into the game firstly what is Metroidvania?. Diving deep to the 80's, Metroid game was firstly released in that year. This first game defined an entire genre of games that still keep us locked at home trying all our best to finish it. Metroidvania genre is very simple, a 2D, 2.5D and more recently 3D side platforming, looking like the classical mario games, but with exploring. When you enter a level in grime, castlevania series back there on PS3 or what so ever metroidvania games, you are open to explore the level at your own will, mostly no scripted action, or forced direction. There is no right or wrong, you choose to explore the upper part first or the lower part. with each having the difficulty of stunts, enemies, traps and so on.

Grime grabs all of these elements of metroidvania genre, and then Akupara Studios, the game devs, decided to add the new modernish flavor by adding elements from souls games like elden ring and sekiro to the game. This makes the game more fun, challenging and always forces you to keep hitting that replay button so many times.

Grime: Colors of Rot is a 3D side platformer developed by Akupara Studios. It features the most fun form of challenging enemies, exploration that include jumping into the darkness without knowing what to meet there and some stunt jumps and deadly traps that won't leave you alone. The game has amazing graphics, good tutorial on how to pick things up and basically good concept. You are a creature with a black dot head, a black hole I would like to call, who gets his life to explore where he is and what is happening. That's the story you get, want to know more? get the game cause I don't like to spoil fun for people. The game basically is shipped with Inventory, meaning that you can loot things out from air, Skills, meaning variety of builds and ability to replay the game again with different flavors. All in all for me, it is a good package. You know what, this game reminds me of Dead Cells, in which way there was weapons and upgrades and stuff, but grime is 3D with good polished graphics that fit in 2023.

a screenshot from the game encasing the weapons

There are variety of weapons in Grime; Colors of Rot. From a Maul axe that is so phat and hit like a truck, bellows mace, fingers axe and so much more. on 'so much more', the game had recently a free DLC that added a lot of content to the game as balancing stats, weapons etc. The environments are well crafted and seem alive. the way they made the background of these levels are awesome, the attention to detail is inevitable. The platform is filled with traps, challenges and secret rooms that is enough to drive you insane. You need to check on every wall that it is closed or you might just go into a dark passage that might have stronger challenging enemies or weapons and materials. Bosses in this game kind of remind me with Dead Cells again, but this time it comes with immortal elden ring difficulty. They are huge, good looking, or should i say rot looking, and the game actually gives you so many tools to face them. Sorry for the lie, the combat is based on only melee weapons as the entire game is built around dodging and parrying the attacks, but who knows, it might be coming along the way.

The Verdict:

Grime: Colors of Rot is a wonderful rotten game, this is going to keep you busy for a while, a compelling story, good graphics, well done crafted world and some traps that you will be yelling at at the middle of the night. you can buy the game from cdkeys here
