Reaver is coming to test your fast reflexes
Reaver is a ultra-fast ultra-cool FPS game. Developed by Tinker NOVA Games. Reaver currently has a demo so I thought why not review it. Straight from the demo to the post, The game looks amazing. What caught my eye at first glance was the art style of the game. This art style is so simple in the way that most of your screen is red and blue with mixture of other colors. The mixture of these colors gives a neon vibe to the game, which is amazing. After opening the main menu and going in to play, a level select menu got up to me. This is not bad for me as it is still under development. I chose to start with the prologue, to get to know the game. The first problem I encountered was the mouse sensitivity is low. It was so low for me, I don't know if it was a bug or else. Tweaking the sensitivity to the max and graphics also, then hopped to the game. The amount of momentum you carry with moving around is crazy, but fun. You get to move through a maze like hallway pattern, which I thought to be the movement tutorial i guess. Then came the shooting dolls and interacting NPCs. While moving in the prologue, I noticed the textures that the devs used for the walls. It looks magnificent. Along with the textures of weapons and enemies is great.
There is a story in the game, or at least the prologue with interacting with the NPCs. What I liked also was the amount of detail to the NPCs is awesome. Levels also include some parkour segments to find secret passages and much more. The gameplay is awesome. I like the way the game gets centered on the dodge while shooting system. For me, this is a lot of fun, using the simple rule for me chaos = fun. Once you get through the checkpoint, the room gets closed and enemies spawn right in front of you. The AI is very aggressive, once they get close they lunge at you with a distance. I had a couple of tries to get to used to the controls and their attacks. Speaking of controls, they are simple. Yet there was no guide or significant tutorial on how these tools work, so I had to get to know myself. you have a double dash with shift and double jump with space bar. You can jump over walls, so if you jump on a wall you get another jump. These controls aided the speed of the game. I like games that use "you stop, you die" idea, and the controls here are for that.
The gameplay system consist of what look like to be a wave system in a room. You get through empty passages, that may have secret passages and totems to find. The moment you get through a checkpoint at a large wide room, the wave system starts. The prologue I had around 5 melee enemies that lunge at you from the other side of the room, which was the hardest for me. There were also Caster type enemies that cast magic orbs that deal damage to you. Now the game gets challenging as these projectiles travel at the speed of light to hit you. You need to perfectly time your dash and jump to dodge it. after you clear the wave, a door gets the green color, letting you to pass to the next room. For me, this was fun for ages. With this system, the game was a little addictive, but on the challenging side.
There are 4 weapons added to the game, a pistol, a shotgun "my favorite", a rifle and a rocket launcher. All these weapons had the same toon shader of gray/black/red. The given weapons at the start was a little non fun for me, cause I don't know who is who and stuff but you will get the hang of it. The guns feels responsive and fun. Each gone had a nice ability with RMB that you can use. The revolver for example, can charge a big attack with holding RMB then release. The bullets are reflective on the walls. This was a surprise and a huuuge plus to the game.
Downsides:
For me, the game didn't have that huge flaws. The main menu needs a little bit of spice. It isn't bad but could be better for a rare gem like REAVER. The tutorial was mostly text and wasn't that interactive. You have to consider that this game is still under development.
The Verdict:
REAVER is a great game. I believe this game is going to be a hit on release. Great art style, cool movement style and most importantly chaotic fun.I encourage everyone to wishlist the game on steam to support the devs making this game more fun and more polished. This was me Joey and thanks for reading.
