A big promise for a game, introducing SparkHunt
SparkHunt is an indie upcoming game developed by Oleksandr Zapisochny in the indie game cup. The game is based on unreal engine. It is one of the more bizarre on the better side of gaming. Without further a do, let's jump on to it. This is Joey and this is SparkHunt.
First things first, the game had a lot of poor performance on linux. I had to play it on windows with reasonable framerate to be able to enjoy it. Upon opening the game, it lead to a nice main menu, without a settings button. There was no tweakable settings in the game. Once I got into the first and only level, I noticed the tiny little bit of a story. A young woman suddenly spawns in an alley and get abducted by orcs. You venture through waves of those orcs to fight the boss and free the woman. The cutscene had no background music. There was some music in the gameplay though. You can pause to see the controls of the game. This indie game actually reminded me of street brawlers as Street of Rage 4. Looking into a game like SparkHunt, shows how the indie game development is catching on the AAA studios with mega budgets.
The environments were great. They were well made up to the point where I had to stop laying to look at the live background behind. It was good and area transitions weren't bad. What made the game so for me was the gameplay system of the game. The way of the animations and the button mash brawlers. It was an unbelievable experience. Coming from the Streets of Rage 4 perspective it isn't that different, but unreal graphics are awesome. It is incredible how a single developer was able to produce a game like this.
This game also had some experimentation with the AI. The AI in this game was actually aggressive, closer to the organic side. For example, The AI use the time when you get up to through a rapid punch at you. Other times they randomize their attacks at a certain point. With the great AI, came the amazing animations. It felt like a real street brawl. with the dodging mechanics and punching combos, it felt like a king to dodge an attack and then break the buttons to release a full combo. This was a wonderful experience for me at least.
BUGS?
There was some bugs as sudden freezes I encountered while playing. Other bugs where in sound where it gets no music but the effects of punching and attacks are there. Not to forget the 12 fps experience I got on fedora linux using lutris was a no fun. I used Lutris to run the game on Proton-GE-7.0, and it ran with 12 fps. On windows 10 the game ran very smooth 30 fps experince with OBS screen recorder recording the game. This is a prototype demo though, so I didn't expect a full on compatibility with linux.
The Verdict
SparkHunt is a bizarre fun side brawler that reminds me of streets of rage 4. Built on the unreal engine that gives great graphics to the game. With smart aggressive enemies and unstoppable action, the game gives promise to be a big hit if continued. These games like SparkHunt denies the idea that a game like this is made by a single developer from animation and else.
If you want to try the game yourself, you can download the game on the official indie cup page with a google drive link here: https://indiecup.net/ukraine/participants/sparkhunt/.
