A new indie roguelite under the microscope, Introducing Lone Ruin
Lone Ruin is a new indie roguelite game developed by Cuddle Monster Games studio in the unity engine. Before we jump into the game, we need to understand what are roguelites first. Roguelikes games are games that utilize the mechanism of dungeon crawling, killing monsters and bosses along the way. After killing those monsters, you get to obtain better and stronger weapons. After that, you get into a new level/wave and get again to solve puzzles and so on. Roguelike games started since the old 1980s ASCI II games on old systems. Until the release of the game that changes the genre forever, Hades. Hades was a Rogue-LITE game. Where the dungeon crawling is there but it is procedurally generated, aka made random on every run. This gave the game a lot of diversity since every time you start to play the dungeon aka the world gets randomly generated. After Hades, the genre changed completely, with more roguelites are getting in the development. One of the newer releases of roguelite games include Vampire Survivors and Brotato.
After answering the question of what is roguelite games, we need to get to the game of Lone Ruin. Lone Ruin here is a roguelite like Hades, but it has a different artistic style. Lone Ruin is an indie game, meaning that the game is made with small budget and small team of developers. The game looks good and fun, shout out to the developers for making a good game, Without further ado let's get into the review.
Firstly, The game has an intuitive main menu screen. I liked its minimal design and great color contrast. Once you start, you get to talk to what looks like to be a reaper and choose an ability to use as a primary fire. Getting you a weapon to start and then you hop in to choose the dungeon where you want to start. Every Dungeon has a harder difficulty than before and has a reward you get after clearing the dungeon off enemies. Lone Ruin was actually a little bit challenging because this is what roguelites are about. A game that is hard enough and hooky to keep you retrying and starting over again and again. I liked the artstyle of the game. It had great weapon effects and intuitive controls. The enemies were aggressive and looked good in the artstyle of the game. The game ran well on my PC on Windows 10 no issues at all. This is probably because the game is made in the unity engine for 2D/3D art. This is not bad because it makes the game accessible for most devices. I like the abilities of the game. I didn't see them all but what I saw was great and fun especially the scythe. It had good damage and satisfying feel when hitting enemies. The game had a different list of enemies for different dungeons and there was a lot of dungeons in the game. With that all said Thanks for the devs for the great game.
The Verdict
Lone Ruin developed by Cuddle Monster Games studios is a new indie roguelite game on steam. The game had a good artstyle and good accessibility for older devices. Great gameplay and good overall package. Go show love to the developers on twitter. Great dungeons and better weapons. It is a good time fill till the release of Hades II. Thanks for your read, That was Joey and see you on the next gig.
