CULTIC review
What the trend of indie games is going?. a question many people are asking in the indie gaming world. But? why you ask?. Well, everyone wants to make a great game that is MEMORABLE for the players. Many games we play and finish, 2 months later we forget about them. That's why the indie gaming trend is going toward the retro pixel views that looks like the PS1.
CULTIC by Jasozz Games is one of those games, but in a unforgettable way. Distinctive artstyle, compulsive rewarding shooting and the choice for playing the game the way you want, is what describes CULTIC. The game ticked a lot of boxes on my perfect game feature list. From a Action perspective, this game is a beast, enough to make you feel every bullet you shoot. That's why the game has got a lot of popularity among many other indie games on platforms like steam. First things first, the game on linux with a slower FPS than windows, if you want to know. But lowering down the setting a bit wasn't a problem for me. Starting the game, you get a welcome scene about the background of the story of CULTIC. From what I understood, the story of someone disappeared, then a detective went on the case and then that detective got dismissed.
I think that you play as the detective, killing people of a strange cult that turn people to zombies. You then start to play the game, as you wake up from a pile of dead people. After that, you venture through the world of CULTIC. Entering buildings, looting ammo and health, reading intel about what happened. Actually the way the game show you the intel is very clever. You find those very old typewriters that contain a paper. You have a choice to write on the machine or read the written paper on the machine (containing what happened). I like the way the game presents itself. The controls were superb except the part that I had to use the mouse wheel to change weapons then press to choose them. It gave me some latency for changing weapons but hey, the game is still under development. I can't emphasize enough the artstyle of CULTIC. It is unbelievable experience for the eyes. Good looking pixels are becoming a genre in my view here of pixel games. CULTIC is distinctive of course from this genre. I like this direction for indie games, because this style allows developers to make games on lower machines. Lower machines means easier for the developer to work on without freezing and crashing and other stuff. From the gamers point of view, it means better compatibility with old end hardware. Making it accessible for nearly everyone to play the game.
I believe CULTIC here can nearly work on any PC. The setting menu was easy and friendly for tweaking the game. Once you get a gun in CULTIC, you will venture through the curve of dopamine addicition of hitting a headshot. It is.....I can't describe it. The way the shots land and the feeling you get when you hit a head shot. It gives you a rewarding feeling that keeps you aiming for these head shots. Even if you are going to die, keep your headshot going. This gameplay was awesome. I encourage everyone to try the demo on steam, link will be at the end of the article. There many features in the game that made me look at the game in silence for minutes, as the screen shake of the gun shot. When you shoot the gun, the screen shakes as a recoil from the gun. This is a premium feature that many AAA titles DOESN'T HAVE. This idea give the big spectrum question of the compare between indie games and AAA games. Another cool feature was the rotation of the dead bodies. Once you kill a zombie or a cult member (cultic for ease), the bodies rotate to face where you are in respect to them. I liked this feature and I noticed it immediately. Superb ideas were there in CULTIC, an indie game that is better than some of the AAA games in the current market. I liked how the game gave you the freedom of exploration. You explore and go everywhere. There is a direction in the game that I felt. But It is not that direction where it is scripted. I liked the way the textures are made. Gave the game a lot of identity. The enemies were good, hard and always shooting/throwing a thing at you. They just don't attack you with hands. I liked how they behave on my response. AI actually hit me so many times while strafing like in Apex Legends. This shows some efforts were done on the AI system of the game. There is an axe that you can pickup from the zombie that you use or throw at their faces.
The Verdict
CULTIC is a great indie game, It defined how indie games can surpass multi millionaire AAA games in gameplay. Yes the distinctive artstyle is great. Yes this game is still under development and yes the game will be unforgettable for me. Go try the demo on steam and if you liked it make sure to wishlist the game on steam and follow the developer on Twitter. This was Joey on GamerFlux, Onto the void for another time friends.
